Archives for December, 2009

Massively has two EVE Online related news articles up for us today. The first is an informative piece regarding CCP’s aim to mobolize EVE. CCP is interested in developing Mobile applications which interact with EVE through the EVE API, and they intend to pick the brains of MIT students to get where they want to go.

The second story is a little less sterile but somewhat sad, as Massively reports that an EVE Online player lost $19,000 USD in a shady virtual currency deal. Some people buy ISK in huge amounts. This was the case with an EVE player in Denmark, who paid 100,000 Danish Krones (the rough equivalent of 13,500 Euros or USD 19,000) for currency from a shady ISK seller outside of the secure system, and was ultimately left with empty pockets, even after the case ended up in court.

Welcome to a weekly walk around The Vault Network to see what’s cooking in all corners of the community. Below you will find a list of last week’s features to help you keep on top of the latest!

EVE Online has set a new peak concurrent user record of 45,186 users! Nice, and as CCP says, a great way to start out 2009.

While we’ve made tremendous serverside changes in the EVE Online infrastructure with the EVE64 and StacklessIO initiatives, it is truly a testament to our loyal fans that 5 years into EVE’s existence we are still breaking records and more people are flying in New Eden than ever before.

We know we’ll be trying to find leftover champagne from New Year’s EVE to celebrate. When we do, we’ll toast to you!

Welcome to another weekly issue of Locked in the Vault, where we sit right back and hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip. That started from this tropic port aboard this tiny ship. Or something like that. Here’s what was happening around The Vault Network over the past week!

CCP Zulupark writes up a new EVE Online Developer Blog to discuss how they plan on dealing with graphics requirements for their upcoming expansion(s). EVE prides itself on being able to run on pretty much any computer built after 1998. BUT… at this point it also requires them to downtune their engine quite a bit to maintain the “Classic” client. To allow players to take advantage of newer technology, it’s out with “Classic” and in with “Premium Lite”.

Premium Lite will only require ShaderModel 2.0 hardware, and far less texture memory than the current Premium, ensuring good framerates on older hardware. We won’t stop there – we are providing two flavors of ShaderModel 2.0 compatible shaders, currently named “lo” and “hi”. What does this mean? It means that framerate enthusiasts can get even more performance when running under ShaderModel 2.0. We will also allow people to select any ShaderModel below what their hardware supports – thus allowing players to trade quality for performance and vice versa.
So the plan is to discontinue ShaderModel 1 and the Classic Client for Apocrypha come March 10th, and replace it with Premium Lite. In the Winter 2009 Expansion they may also discontinue support for ShaderModel 2. How many people will this affect? You can weigh in.
