CCP Zulupark writes up a new EVE Online Developer Blog to discuss how they plan on dealing with graphics requirements for their upcoming expansion(s). EVE prides itself on being able to run on pretty much any computer built after 1998. BUT… at this point it also requires them to downtune their engine quite a bit to maintain the “Classic” client. To allow players to take advantage of newer technology, it’s out with “Classic” and in with “Premium Lite”.
Premium Lite will only require ShaderModel 2.0 hardware, and far less texture memory than the current Premium, ensuring good framerates on older hardware. We won’t stop there – we are providing two flavors of ShaderModel 2.0 compatible shaders, currently named “lo” and “hi”. What does this mean? It means that framerate enthusiasts can get even more performance when running under ShaderModel 2.0. We will also allow people to select any ShaderModel below what their hardware supports – thus allowing players to trade quality for performance and vice versa.
So the plan is to discontinue ShaderModel 1 and the Classic Client for Apocrypha come March 10th, and replace it with Premium Lite. In the Winter 2009 Expansion they may also discontinue support for ShaderModel 2. How many people will this affect? You can weigh in.

I love drama! Thanks Massively for pointing out that some dude in EVE Online made off with 86 billion ISK! Xabier, Dynasty Investments Manager for the player-run Dynasty Banking, had access to the funds invested by EVE players. Massively contacted the player whom stated they had taken 86 billion ISK, which is now worth 106.2 billion ISK due to investments made with the stolen booty. Apparently the theft resulted in a couple of folks getting canned from the virtual bank, and changes will be made to how much ISK a player can access. From the bank:
“This ISK lost due to Xabier only effects Dynasty Banking’s equity balance, so we still have more than enough assets to cover all deposits and will resume business per usual.” His statement seems to indicate that the situation is under control, but there are other options to keep the bank afloat should investors panic and thus cause a further run on the bank. EBANK, now the largest player-run bank in New Eden, has stated it’s willing to assist in the event that this run on Dynasty Banking becomes serious.

CCP Whisper takes to the blogwaves to talk about the upcoming expansion for EVE Online, Apocrypha. The first thing that caught my eye was the introduction of a new travel mode, Wormholes! You have to admit that’s pretty hot, like who hasn’t wanted to travel through a wormhole at some point? I know! You’d be crazy not to want to.
Wormholes will bring us to this new frontier, appearing all over New Eden as a result of a cataclysmic event, the nature of which we’ll reveal in the coming months. These wormholes are unstable and will spawn and vanish randomly throughout the known universe. A pilot who stumbles across one of these stellar phenomena can fly through it and travel to unknown space, where there are no stargates or stations, just the unexplored void of a new solar system. And when I say “new solar system” that is exactly what I mean. It will not be moving you to instanced space but rather to one of the thousands of new solar systems we will be adding to the EVE universe.
The wormholes themselves will be open only for a randomly determined amount of time and can only let through a certain amount of mass before they collapse. Pilots should carefully consider the information their ship’s computer gives them about a wormhole before committing to travel through it. Although there will always be a way back to known space from wormhole space, you may have to search long and hard to locate it. And in that process, you may find wormholes that lead you to even more unexplored wormhole systems, launching you on a voyage of exploration the likes of which EVE has never seen before.

On Friday, 6 February 2009, EVE’s partner Vivox will perform maintenance that will disable EVE Voice. The downtime will begin during EVE’s regularly scheduled maintenance period at 11:00 GMT and will end at approximately 13:00 GMT. EVE Online’s maintenance will not be extended.
Once service is restored, you may have to disable and re-enable EVE Voice in the Options panel, in which you:
1. Hit the ESC key.
2. Select the Audio & Chat tab.
3. Under the “Voice Settings section, uncheck then re-check the “EVE Voice enabled” option.
4. Hit the “Close Window” button.
Or you can just restart the EVE client. Either way put down your mics for now and get some fresh air! When the game comes up shut yourself in like you are Dracula and game!!!

Ladies and gentlemen we have a new Newsletter fresh from the big men in charge! The newsletter pretty much talks about the upcoming expansion, in which they talk about Wormholes, new NPC race, and a welcomed AI revamp along with many more goodies including some aimed at new players! Also they touch up on the biggest buzz news lately! The disolution of Bands of Brothers (BoB)! I wonder what they have to say about it..
Greetings from CCP.
We could not imagine a more exciting time for EVE Online. Truly.
Here’s a quick breakdown of things going on.
EVE Online: Apocrypha
More and more details from our upcoming March 10th expansion are coming out every day in DevBlogs and news stories. You can join our RSS feed for DevBlogs here: http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp
Main features outlined already are: Wormholes and exploration, a new NPC race and revamped NPC AI, a reimagining of the New Player Experience, and the addition of a skill queue. Further details will be available soon on www.eveonline.com
Furthermore, with the release of Apocrypha, we’ll be available in retail outlets all over the known universe through a distribution deal with Atari.
When was the last time you reviewed EVE? Before the Quantum Rise expansion? After 10 free expansions and 6 years of continuous growth the game has changed quite a lot.
EVE Online Alliance Tournament VI comes to a finale this weekend LIVE on TV.
Watch the top 32 alliances fight it out to see who will be crowned the PVP Champions of EVE! Tune in here: http://www.eveonline/evetv to catch the must-view matches on Saturday that will include the #1 ranked alliance R.U.R. fighting at 1500 GMT, defending champions Ev0ke at 1900 and a rematch of last weekend’s nail biter between Against ALL Authorities and HUN Reloaded at 1940. Along with the matches, we will have Developers on the couch with some sneak peeks on the upcoming expansion “EVE Online: Apocrypha”!
The action continues all weekend with live broadcasts starting at 1450 GMT each day, continuing until 2100 on Saturday and 2200 on Sunday. Previous matches are available on our YouTube channel — http://www.youtube.com/CCPGames — along with a whole lot of other exciting things. It’s a popular event and vaulted us into the top 15 directors on YouTube for several days.
The Second CSM Meeting
The Council of Stellar Management (CSM) is a player-elected representative body responsible for bringing player issues to the developers and then reporting back on the discussions to the player base. Several issues have been pushed through production including the inclusion of a skill queue in the upcoming expansion. The CSM meets in Iceland once per six month term and the meetings are arbitrated by a professional moderator. The results of their last meeting can be found here: http://myeve.eve-online.com/council/transcripts/2009/CSM_CCP_Meetings_15-17_01_2009.pdf
CCP CSM Project Lead Petur Oskarsson and the CSM members themselves are available for interview upon request.
Other things of interest:
There have been two major in-game, completely player driven events in EVE recently.
The dissolution of one of EVE’s longest standing and largest player alliances, Band of Brothers (BoB), without a shot fired. This IS metagaming intrigue and has proven quite popular in the media’s eyes.
* While we refrain from commenting on player events—preferring the living history of our single-shard world to stay with the players—I am happy to put you in touch with the parties in question. They have given us the permission to do so.
An in-game assassination DURING last weekend’s Alliance Tournament elimination rounds.
*
The spirit of competition still has an undercurrent of political intrigue via a high profile vendetta
We’ll be at GDC San Francisco to show off Apocrypha. March 23-27th. http://www.gdconf.com/. It’s never too early to set up an interview. Just send requests to nedcoker@ccpgames.com. Halldor Fannar, our CTO, will be presenting “From Evolution to Revolution: Upgrading the Graphics Engine of EVE Online.” Our CMO, Ryan Scott Dancey, will speak on “Network Marketing: Leveraging Social Networks to Grow an MMO”. We’ll have a variety of other CCPers there ripe for the interviewing and will be in the West Hall (Career Pavillion) at booth
#230.
We’ve recently broken our PCU (Peak Concurrent User) record with 48,065 people in the same persistent game world at the same time. We’re quite proud.
I’ll be updating the electronic press kit as soon as possible. Just a few assets left to get in for Apocrypha.
If you have any needs for assets or interviews, please let me know. We’ve got lots of great trailers, screenshots and concept art pieces to liven up any medium.

The first 16 elimination rounds of the 6th Alliance Tournament are over for today!
Every match was intense and all of them were a fight till the death except for one which went down to who had more points since time was up!
Today’s matches show cased the thought but sometimes the guesswork that goes into some making up the fleets, but also showed the problems when your over prepared for a different situation then what is in store for you. Probable Cause’s odd fielding of seven Osprey Navy Issues highlighted this as team contact badass2k6 explained: “our set up was to combat [Pandemic Legion] Ishtars and unfortunately they left them at home”. And, Pandemic Legion actually brought five Caracal Navy Issues and three Drakes as part of their fleet.
Tomorrow’s eliminations and end of the 6th Alliance Tournament will continue to be covered by Interstellar Correspondents on Galnet.

Ok ladies and gentlemens we have a big update from EVE themselves! I would give you the first paragraph but most of you, including me have short attention spans and don’t feel like reading it so i’ll skip right to the juicy part!
We´re developing a skill queue. I´m expecting that the bearer of good news is praised and flattered. The CSM was happy to hear we were developing a skill queue, but their songs of praise were rather short. I expect haikus. You may want to read on and make yourself familiar with how the queue works and the early UI mock-up.
About time!
Yes, it is about time isn´t? There were good reasons why we never did it before, though.
We are proud that we are realistic and nice (or cool) enough to know that people have a life outside EVE (shocking, I know) and while they are not playing EVE you can still advance your character.
While it´s cool that you can advance your character when you are offline, we did worry that if we introduced a skill queue some players might just set a queue for a year and become less active in EVE. That´s not what a massively multiplayer ONLINE game is about. EVE is a social game and we want you exposed to other players so you can start making legends out of you or corporation and strive for domination. A long abstinence from EVE would ruin this for us.
And yet, we know people do have lives outside of EVE and you don´t really want to set your alarm to change skills, or worse lose out on skill training because you couldn´t make it home in time. And it´s always the shorter skills that fall right between a day and anything less than that which are the hardest to fit into your schedule.
So we sought a way to make the planning of skill training easier by using a queue, but without the risk of people queuing forever and not really being active in the game.
The queue
The skill training system we came up with allows you to queue skills that will start training in the next 24 hours. You can enter in up to 50 skills in a queue, as long as they all start training within 24 hours. This leaves room to start a skill that will take 6 hours, followed with one that takes 12 to complete. With only 18 hours of training prepared, the queue still has room to start another skill.
If you train a skill the old fashioned way (by activating a skill as you do now without the queue window) it will still be listed in the queue as the top skill; the skill you are training now. If you don´t add a follow-up skill then you´d have to come back when that skill is finished. You can still start training skills from your normal character sheet without entering the queue.
You can move skills around in the queue to find the optimal order for you and apply the changes. After that the queue will update to your latest changes. Your character will continue to train whatever is in the queue until a new queue is applied.
UI
We have an early mock-up of the queue, you can see it below.
Queue Queue Image!
The section on the left is a screen where you can view your skills and apply filters. You can show all skills or the ones you haven´t finished training or apply other filters. You can easily select a skill and drag it to the right section which is the queue itself.
The bar above is a visual representation of the next 24 hours, so you can see how much room is left by looking at how much of the bar is filled in with colour.
Future
We are hard at work completing the skill queue and we have left room to develop the way you manage skills further. For example we could add a planning system and maybe even connect skill plans to certificates or modules. We´d appreciate any feedback you have on the skill queue and other ways to help you manage your skills. Or to paraphrase the CSM ‘ YES, OMG11!!!11CCP WeLovesyou7!!Thx!ByeKissesHUgs´.
